A Little Bit Culty

Hey, Hun: Emily Lynn Paulson on MLMs and Other Lies

Imagine this: an invitation comes your way to join a group of friends, mostly moms (and let’s assume you are one). Primary activities involve drinking lots of wine, relishing in sisterhood and female empowerment, and best of all, making loads of money. It’s enticing as hell, which explains why Multi Level Marketing groups (MLMs) remain ubiquitous today.

What could go wrong? A shit ton! Hence why our guest today, author and mother Emily Lynn Paulson, believes that all MLMs—which form a $180 billion industry—are cults. Oh, but they’re not just your average cults, because lobbyists and politicians are fighting hard to keep the legal pyramid schemes not only intact, but growing throughout American suburbia (and beyond) like wildfire.

In this episode, we discuss how to not get caught up in the flames.

Herbal Radio

Interviews on Herbal Radio with Thomas Dick | Featuring Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia

Welcome to a very special episode featuring Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia. We love the soulful tunes from this sister duo and get the feeling that their music resonates with a lot of other folks in the herbal community as well. It was certainly wonderful welcoming Leah and Chloe as our live musical guests for our first virtual Free Herbalism Project (FHP) back in May 2020. After the FHP collaboration, we knew that we wanted to get to know them a little better.

Herbal Radio producer, Elise, sits in with Thomas for a lovely conversation with Leah and Chloe. We talk about their upbringing, inspirations, relationship to the herbal community, herbs that support them while on tour and at home, as well as the slow music movement. We hope you enjoy!

Rising Appalachia brings to the stage a collection of sounds, stories, and songs steeped in tradition and a devotion to world culture. Intertwining a deep reverence for folk music and a passion for justice, they have made it their life’s work to sing songs that speak to something ancient yet surging with relevance. Whether playing at Red Rocks or in rail cars, at Italian street fairs or to Bulgarian herbalists, this fiercely independent band has blazed a unique and colorful path across the globe. 11 years into their movement, Rising Appalachia believes that the roots of all these old songs are vital to our ever evolving soundscape.

Voices of the Sacred Feminine

How the Burning Times Trauma Lives on Today with Beth Bartlett

Beth Bartlett, Ph.D, is an educator, author, activist and spiritual companion. She returns to the show today discussing how the Burning Times of yesteryear actually still affects women today. I'll ask her about this historical trauma and how it operates in the world and why healing from trauma requires a spiritual response. We'll delve into feminist spirituality and how that movement is a valuable part of this healing, particularly the reclamation of the immanence of the Divine. Lots to talk about today, including the importance of Carol Christ's piece, Why Women Need the Goddess - as well as the world. You can check out her previous appearance on the show on February 15 when we discussed Restoring Sisterhood.

Beth is Professor Emerita of Women, Gender and sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and the author of numerous books and articles, including Journey of the Heart: Spiritual Insights on the Road to a Transplant, Rebellious Feminism: Camus's Ethic of Rebellion and Feminist Thought, and Making Waves: Grassroots Feminism in Duluth and Superior. She's been active in feminist, peace and justice, and rights of nature and climate justice movemts, and has been a committed advocate for water protectors.
