"Why Shamanism Now?" with Christina Pratt

The Cycle of Transformation: Part One

What if you had a chance to hit the restart button on your authenticity? To peel back all the layers of trauma to reveal the magnificent human being you came here to be? What would you risk pursuing if you knew you would be held by a community to love and support you through the entire process?

This week guest host Langston Kahn, senior teacher at the Last Mask Center, will interview students involved in the first year of the Cycle of Transformation, a 4-year training process offered which begins with a week-long residential workshop, Masks of Illusion and the Authentic Self. They will explore together what brought them to the Cycle, how their lives have been changed by the first year of the teachings and what it's like to be supported in transformation by a contemporary shamanic community.

Appropriation and Deep Practice in Shamanism

Education, respect for all life, and awareness of both history and who writes it allows us to use cultural appropriation as a guide for what not to do that can take us directly into deeper practice. Cultural appropriation almost always involves members of the dominant culture taking from cultures of minority groups. This includes taking intellectual and spiritual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts and the unauthorized use of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language and symbols, stories, cuisine, traditional medicine, rituals, and ceremonies. This week host and shaman, Christina Pratt, explores appropriation in contemporary shamanism, why it is not only harmful, but often leads to shallow practice. When we forego our desire for shortcuts, need for insurance, and avoidance of discomfort are left with the steps humans have always needed to take to create authentic working relationships with their helping spirits.

What Does "shaman" Mean?

Stanley Krippner respectfully defined shamans as "community-assigned magico-religious professionals who deliberately alter their consciousness in order to obtain information from the 'spirit world.' They use this knowledge and power to help and to heal members of their community, as well as the community as a whole." This week host and shaman, Christina Pratt, explores how we could use the word "shaman" well as responsible, shamanically informed global citizens. Who gets to use the word "shaman"? And how could it be used with respect, intelligence, and some reasonable hope for the future?

Power and Shamanism

Where do we learn the right use of power with examples of abuse, misuse, and squandering of power everywhere? As we enter the new year and look at our world leaders and their decisions, the relationship between power and responsibility clearly continues to erode on many fronts. And what do we see when we look at ourselves? How is the alignment between power and the responsibility to wield it well doing in our own home? Join host and shaman, Christina Pratt, as she explores our responsibility as shamanically informed global citizens. When we reach to our helping spirits for power, what is our responsibility? When the spirit world reaches out to us, how to we cultivate the balance and wholeness necessary for right action in the world?

How Nicole Kidman Almost Got Tom Cruise to Leave Scientology

[A]fter marrying Cruise, Kidman played the role of the dutiful wife, working her way up the Scientology ladder. In Scientology, once one achieves full control over one's thoughts, thereby reaching the level of “Clear,” they may work their way up “The Bridge to Total Freedom,” or the spiritual ranks of the practice (each level will run you many thousands of dollars). These are called Operating Thetan (OT) levels. OT members are believed to have achieved a state of godliness, able to exercise full control over both their mind and their surrounding environment. Kidman is said to have reached OT II, wherein one’s confronted their past “incarnations” and released the accompanying negative energy.

. . .

But by late 1992, Kidman had become fed up with [David] Miscavige, in particular, and left Scientology. Cruise followed shortly thereafter, and by the time filming began on Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut across the pond in November 1996, the two had been separated from the practice for a few years. But Miscavige had his ways of remaining in the picture.

“Miscavige used all of Cruise’s household employees, including his assistant Michael Doven, who spied on him for 10 years on behalf of the Church of Scientology, to give Miscavige daily reports of what Cruise was up to,” says [Tony] Ortega.

“They were all Scientologists,” adds [Mike] Rinder, “so everything that went on in Tom’s life was reported to either Shelly or David Miscavige, and when they went to the U.K. for Eyes Wide Shut, they were sequestered.”
