Around the Web, Around the World

A Little Bit Culty

Darkness Unveiled: Sochil Martin Exposes LA Luz Del Mundo

Around the same time as Jeffrey Epstein’s infamous arrest, another billionaire was going to court for similar appalling crimes. Naasón Joaquín García, the ongoing leader of the Light of the World non-traditional La Luz Del Mundo (LLDM) church is currently serving a maximum of 16 years and 8 months in prison for the sexual abuse of minors. The self-proclaimed “Apostle of God” was eventually denied bail after setting that bail at $50 million, which according to the California Attorney General, was the highest ever imposed on an individual by the Los Angeles County. The denial came about because prosecutors feared his extremely loyal followers might actually raise the cash.

We spoke to Sochil Martin who was born into the LLDM and broke away from it after a lifetime of abuse. The outspoken survivor and whistleblower shares her experience–from being raised in church’s clutches and ultimately fleeing, to helping federal agents bring García to justice, and how she’s healing now.

Please note, this series includes details of sexual abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised. If you, or someone who know, is a survivor of sexual assault, abuse, grooming, child abuse, or human trafficking, RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline offers support at 800.656.HOPE (4673).

Voices of the Sacred Feminine

Restoring Sisterhood w/Beth Bartlett

Beth Bartlett, Ph.D., is an educator, author, activist and spiritual companion. She is also Professor Emerita of Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She's authored numerous books and articles making her the perfect guest to discuss how patriarchy has been able to divide and conquer, turning women against each other by status, race, class, ethnicity and in competition for men. We'll discuss the pros and cons of sisterhood and a new notion of "sistering" that might be a more hopeful path toward healing our relationships with each other.

Desperate House Witches

The Path of Elemental Witchcraft with Salicrow

Salicrow joins me to discuss her book, The Path of Elemental Witchcraft: A Wyrd Woman's Book of Shadows.

A Book of Shadows is a witch’s sacred journal, filled with personal experiences and the intimate working of spells. In this practical guide to elemental witchcraft, Salicrow invites you into her personal Book of Shadows, detailing hands-on techniques, spells, and rituals to work with the magic of the four elements--Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. She presents teachings on each element through the lens of different schools of magic, such as divination, healing, protection, manifestation, and enchantment. Within each of these elemental teachings is a series of progressive lessons, including a personal story from the author’s lifetime of magical practice paired with a technique for you to explore.

Salicrow is a witch, Druid, and natural psychic medium who weaves the traditions of her Irish Traveler and Blackfoot heritage with modern magical techniques. With more than 30 years of professional experience in the psychic arts as a spirit channel and seer, she offers readings for individual groups and teaches workshops throughout the United States and internationally. Honoring the Wild with Irisanya Moon

Honoring the Wild: Reclaiming Witchcraft and Environmental Activism

Irisanya Moon (Practically Pagan) collects meditations on the Reclaiming Witchcraft tradition in this brief, inspiring anthology. Founded in the late 1970s, the Reclaiming tradition is based in “deep, spiritual commitment to the earth, to healing and to linking of magic with political action,” Moon writes. Short accounts from Reclamation witches weave a “tapestry of many different threads,” including tried-and-true advice for being environmentally conscious (buying secondhand clothes, using public transportation), discussions of “magical activism” (which takes the form of writing, storytelling, and organizing protests), and accounts of individuals’ experiences (using directed energy to help protect the California redwood forests during protests). Suggested rituals include an “Extinction Rebellion Ritual” (which involves speaking one’s demands into being in a group setting), while an annotated timeline highlights major moments in Reclamation history, from anti-nuclear demonstrations in 1976 New Hampshire to 2017’s Dakota Access Pipeline protests. Though the takes on activism will be familiar, the personal narratives evoke a raw earnestness and urgency that will encourage readers to do their part to protect the earth. Reclamation witches and those curious about the tradition will find value here. (Feb.)
