Around the Web, Around the World

A Little Bit Culty

Cult to Comedy: Shannon Payton on Turning Trauma into Humor

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Shannon Payton, perhaps better known online as “Shanny Pants,” is a hilarious mother of three whose Tiktoks (etc.) have turned her into a viral queen, with her videos even appearing on TVs across the nation via The Kelly Clarkson show. It’s crazy to think that, for the first 31 years of her life, Payton was actually living something more similar to The Culty Clarkson show (we’re so sorry, we had to try), having grown up in Northern California within a community that her grandparents originally joined as a non-denominational bible study club before it turned into a fear and shame-based cult, ruled by a wacky shithead who loved “marking” (ex-communicating) anyone who questioned him, and who also forbid women from wearing pants or basically being like, humans with any rights or autonomy whatsoever. Fun!

Aroma, Psyche, and Body: Creating New Narratives | Featuring Erika Galentin (Rerelease)

This episode of Herbal Radio is a rerelease from December 2021 and comes from Mountain Rose Herbs’ Free Herbalism Project recorded November 12, 2021 and presented as a webinar for thousands of herbalism enthusiasts.

Join Erika Galentin, MNIMH, RH (AHG), for an exploration of aromatic plants as useful tools for supporting our minds and bodies on our journeys to wellness. We will take a brief tour of the inner workings of our sense of smell, how aromas are perceived, and their influence on our memories and emotions. This will be followed by a discussion on how emotions such as grief and shame can have significant impacts on how our bodies function. We will also explore how we can use aroma from plants to create new emotions and memories through the power of the myths, metaphors, and stories they can carry to the psyche.

Erika Galentin is a Clinical Herbalist and Aromatherapist, consulting from Sovereignty Herbs in Athens and Columbus, OH. She holds a degree in Herbal Medicine from the University of Wales and the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine and is a professional member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (UK) and the American Herbalists Guild (USA). With over 15 years of clinical practice, Erika seeks to encourage positive, learned relationships between plants and people as well as people and their bodies.
