WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Jungian psycho-analyst Estes tells stories -- fairy tales you know and lesser known tales from around the world. She reveals the archetypal underpinnings of these stories and shares the common psychological threads that cross every cultural boundary. This book, for me, has been an experiment in bibliomancy. I've been reading it, in no particular order, for a very long time. I just periodically open it and find that it says exactly what I need to hear. There's a reason this book was on the bestseller lists for years. It's brilliant. This book is a restorative for the injured female psyche, a tonic for the soul. This is a must read.
IRON JOHN: A Book About Men by Robert Bly
I'm pretty sure this fulfills the equal time rule. This book came out about the same time as the Estes book and they are almost always mentioned in the same breath. I can't speak to the male experience but I have male friends who have gotten a great deal out of this book.
