Since about that time, war had been literally continuous, though strictly
speaking it had not always been the same war.... Officially the change of partners had never happened. Oceania was at war with Eurasia: therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia. The enemy of the moment always represented absolute evil, and it followed that any past or future agreement with him was impossible.
-- George Orwell's 1984
And, so it goes, with our amorphous "war on terror." Because we have declared war on an emotion, no facts or reason apply. Fear is adequate justification. Mr. Bush, who has not mentioned the name Osama bin Laden since some time last summer, has, through some act of prestidigation, convinced half of the American people that Saddam Hussein was involved in the attacks 9/11.
So who will be next in our endless war for endless peace? Surely, gentle reader, you didn't think turning Bagdhad into a heap of bloody, radioactive rubble would be the end of the President's crusade. Will it be North Korea? The way things look now, they would have to land a nuclear missile in downtown Los Angeles for the Bush Administration to acknowledge that this is anything other than a "regional problem." But, in this world of ever-shifting rationales, who can say?
Perhaps it will be one of the countries listed by Richard Perle, aka., "The Prince of Darkness," who, under some baffling arrangement, is paid by the Heritage Foundation to sit in the Pentagon as an "advisor." His list of targets includes, "Syria or Iran or Sudan or Yemen or Somalia or North Korea or Lebanon or the Palestinian Authority." Or, perhaps, the list will come from Perle's protege, Laurent Murawiec, whose Power Point presentation to the Defense Policy Board caused diplomatic turmoil, when he recommended a take-over of Saudi Arabia and announced that, "Egypt is the prize."
Only one thing is certain. "There's no telling how many wars it will take to secure freedom in the homeland." -- George W. Bush
War is Peace.
Tomorrow evening March 16, at 7:00pm, there will be a candlelight vigil all over the world. It is a global action for peace. The Global Vigil site can help you locate a group in your area. Here are some reasons to attend and add your light to the world.

If all goes to plan for the Bush Administration, and they do, indeed, have the opportunity to unleash their "shock and awe" assault, they will be literally bombing the hell out of the "cradle of civilization." Iraq actually sits atop ancient Sumer and it is, in fact, an archaelogical treasure trove. Two very good articles have been published regarding the rich history of the region and the danger posed to its archaelogical artifacts. The New York Times and the BBC News both provide good information on the ancient structures and antiquities that will be put at grave risk in any air campaign. Biblical scholars will recognize the Old Testament monuments and cities that have been revealed here as historic fact. Not only could a great deal of known history be compromised in a war -- the great Ziggurat of Ur suffered significant damage during Desert Storm in 1991 -- but, much that has been unexplored could be lost to the ages. Only a fraction of the 10,000+ archaelogical sites identified, have been explored. To really appreciate the importance of preserving this region, I recommend the books of Zecharia Sitchin. Sitchin is a linguist, specializing in semitic languages. He is one of a handful of people capable of reading the stone tablets. In his study of these myths, he has come up with a unique angle on the history of civilization as it emerged after the deluge and of the antidiluvian era that was lost beneath the waves.
Given the richness of the history, isn't it a tad interesting that the mother of all bombs that was tested yesterday in Florida for use, in the destruction of Iraq, is called MOAB. As The New York Times reports, "According to Genesis, Moab was born through an incestuous relationship between Lot and a daughter following the destruction of Sodom. The Book of Numbers tells how the Israelites chose the Plains of Moab as their final camp before entering the Promised Land."
